Título: | Contradictory results of the UVCON and saline immersion tests regarding the evaluation of some inhibitor/lacquer combinations on galvanised coatings |

Fecha de publicación: | 2004 | Editor: | Elsevier | Citación: | Progress in Organic Coatings 50 (3): 199-206 (2004) | Resumen: | The effectiveness of inhibitors >with chromate> and >with phosphate> that accompany lacquer films applied on hot galvanised steel specimens has been studied using continuous immersion tests in 3% NaCl and UVCON tests in a climate cabinet. These tests, in combination with the EIS and XPS techniques, show that the behaviour of the inhibitor/lacquer system is dependent on the type of test applied and on the composition of the zinc-base coating used as substrate, besides the chemical formulation of the inhibitor. In the UVCON test, 15 days of exposure were sufficient to show better anti-corrosive behaviour by the lacquer/chromating reagent than with the phosphating reagent used in the study. Surprisingly, in the saline immersion test, which lasted up to 60 days, the differences were much less pronounced. The results suggest a rapid loss of adhesion of the lacquer/phosphating reagents system during the UVCON test, due mainly to water adsorption phenomena at the metal/lacquer interface as a result of the presence of soluble species in it. In studies like this, it seems advisable for coating performance predictions not to rely on only a single type of test. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.
