singular a conservar.
[EN] The objective of this thesis is to study the genesis of soils in Gallocanta Lake and
its surrounding, in agricultural areas and in natural habitats subject to intermittent
flooding. The study has been approached, firstly from a detailed geomorphological
characterization of the lake surroundings in representative areas of contrasting
environments, where the hydrological and sedimentary conditions are more variable,
supported by aerial photographs in dry season and high resolution LiDAR topography.
This has allowed the identification of active and non-active geomorphological units, not
recognizable in the field, on the northern and southern margins of the lake and the
palustrine area of Los Lagunazos. The sedimentary character of the southern margin of
the lake has allowed the development of extensive coastal deposits that include
sequences of sandy barriers, islands, current beaches and non-active beaches, and
coastal lakes. In the north, with higher slope, it predominates the erosive processes
produced by the waves and forms such as micro-cliffs, lacustrine terraces and small
coastal wetlands. The palustrine area of the Lagunazos, located in the SE of the main
lake, with an area of approximately 500 ha, is the area with the greatest accumulation of
sediments in the lake surroundings, and five levels of terraces stepped from 1.6 m up to
4.5 m above the current lake bottom have been mapped. The geomorphological analysis
show the existence of a paleolaguna with a water surface of at least 2300 ha, compared
to the current surface area of 500 ha, and confirm the tendency for the lake to desiccate.
All the results collected in this Thesis about the morphology and composition of the
soils, the identification of coastal geomorphological units, the presence of redox
conditions associated with soil flooding and the nutritional status of the soil-plant
ecosystem, allow the characterization of this natural area and to increase and to improve
the knowledge about the conditions and processes under which the soil is formed and to
show the value of the Gallocanta Lake as a singular natural area to be conserved. Like all
research works, this Thesis has served to gather information from different sources that
have contributed to compile data of interest to interpret the results. The elaboration of this
Thesis opens new directions of study on the soil genesis under fluctuating conditions of
flood.
