Inorganic cherts and opals, formed by diagenetic silicification, appear in a
wide variety of rocks and they are testimony of the replacement environments.
Textures and structures of the host rocks, during the silicification, remain in the
cherts and opals when the replacement is isovolumetric and some examples of these
cases are discussed. The main silica minerals and textures are described considering
the general genetic conditions of formation and the lithology of the replaced host
rock. Several general pattems, in relation to these subjects, are explained considering
that when these pattems are not found, special conditions must be considered.
