CARBOSOL is a collaborative network of Universities and Research Centres (8 groups) all around Spain focused on soil organic matter as a compartment of global Carbon cycle. CARBOSOL is compiling a strong Data Base of Soils of Spain that will provide a wider information about Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks and its associated driver factors: such as soil type, lithology, topography, phytoclime, land use or management. SOC data in Spain often cover limited areas and there are few available studies covering all climatic areas and all land uses. Therefore, our network is making a collaborative effort to gather and compile published and unpublished information on Spanish soils.
CARBOSOL Network¿s aims firstly to perform an accurate quantitation of SOC stocks in Spain for each land use and soil type at different depths. We will also assess the relationships between SOC stocks and different environmental variables.
The combination of soil, climate, lithology, topography and land cover maps and data sets will be used for GIS management and statistical analysis.
This study comprises a comprehensive and accurate analysis of the current organic C stocks for each soil group in the different land use types in Spain. It will also provide an idea of the importance of different environmental factors for the C sequestration capacity of a specific soil type-land use.
