Genetic variation among the populations of Rousettus egyptiacus from the islands of the Gulf of Guinea (Bioko, Príncipe and São Tomé) and two other continental populations of R. egyptiacus, (Río Muni and Guinea Conakry) was studied in order to evaluate their systematic and evolutionary relationships. Insular and mainland populations had similar levels of genetic variation. The data support the sub-specific assignment of the São Tomé and Príncipe populations of R. egyptiacus.
