The rocks present in the biosphere are submitted to different weathering factors. For Jenny (1941), these factors are: the rocks, the climate, the biology, time and man. Under the natural conditions, rock weathering induces soil formation; for historical monuments, it gives stones degradation. The anthropic factor is of great importance through direct action or through pollution.
The presentation is focused on historical monuments constructed of granite. With some references to the more general conditions of the biosphere.
Examples will be chosen from the results of a european project (STEP CT90-0101) managed by M.A. Vicente in Spain, France and Portugal.
